The Bricks and Sticks project project involves partnering with other history focused organizations to preserve historic structures within Jefferson County. One of the current projects is preserving the South Platte Hotel, located at the confluence of the North Fork of the South Platte and the South Platte River.
History Jeffco is partnering with other like-minded organizations to preserve and protect historic structures within Jefferson County. In early 2023 we worked with the Jefferson County Historical Commission to successfully nominate the South Platte Hotel to Colorado's List of Endangered Places, a feat that was announced and celebrated during Colorado Preservation Inc.'s annual "Saving Places" Conference (see related video at 2023 - South Platte Hotel).
Since then, our board has been working with CPI staff, local residents and other concerned citizens to encourage Denver Water (the property's owner) to take prompt action to safeguard the deteriorating two-story wooden structure located on the banks of the convergence of the South Platte and North Fork of the South Platte rivers. The original 1887 hotel was rebuilt in 1913 following a fire. Once a thriving stop along the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad narrow gauge line for tourists and vacationers (especially those fond of trout fishing), the now abandoned and dilapidated building has a leaking roof. The clock is ticking on this one!
